The US reached this tragic number of deaths on Monday, Feb. 22.
More Americans have died of COVID-19 than in all of World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War combined, according to the White House.
The lowering of the American flag is in line with a presidential proclamation that flags should be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings.
The flag will be flying at half-staff until sunset on Friday. Feb. 26.
The decision to fly flags at half-staff rests with the governor. President Biden’s proclamation said lowering the flags is a way to unite the country.
“We, as a Nation, must remember them so we can begin to heal, to unite, and find purpose as one Nation to defeat this pandemic,” the proclamation said.
